Worm Wood Tonic
This recipe is featured in A Farmer’s Failed Feast
I prefer to make this tonic with worm wood roots, but my uncle used the whole herb.
Ingredients
- One handful worm wood roots or roots and leaves, rinsed and dried
- 1 liter (about 1 quart) clear spirits such as vodka or other inexpensive grain alcohol
Preparation
- Preheat an oven to 177°C (350°F). Chop the worm wood roots (and leaves, if using), and spread on a baking sheet. Place in the oven, tossing once or twice, until lightly toasted, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
2. Add the toasted worm wood to the bottle or jar of spirits, and set aside in a cool dark place to steep for at least 2 months, shaking the jar every other day.
